Waltz on Hanoi Summit: Complete Denuclearization of North Korea’s Nuclear Program Must Be the Goal

“And I think the crux of the disconnect here is denuclearization does not mean – at least in my mind – a freezing of the program, which is where we are now – and I think the Administration deserves credit for that. Denuclearization is a destruction of the program. I don’t want to see us leave the program intact, that can be turned back on again years from now, if the North Koreans don’t like how things are going.”
Earlier today, Representative Michael Waltz (FL-R), a member of the House Armed Services Committee, joined Fox News Channel’s “America’s Newsroom” shortly after President Trump’s arrival in Hanoi, Vietnam to discuss the United States-North Korea summit.
Waltz credited the President and former Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley for creating the pressures that brought North Korea to the table for negotiations. Waltz also explained what he is hoping to see from the summit.
“Well Bill, I think it’s worth remembering and remind everyone that war on that Peninsula, which would certainly involve the Chinese military would be horrific and I commend the President for trying something that so many other Administrations have kicked the can down the road on,” Waltz said. “But we do have two big disconnects. One is the timeline… I am in a rush for the North Koreans to come to the table with something very concrete, including a full accounting of their program. And that’s what I want to see coming out of this summit before we make any more concessions.
