On Friday, U.S. Rep. Michael Waltz (R-Fla.) congratulated the winners of the 2019 Congressional Art Competition from Florida’s Sixth District. University High School sophomore Cole Norris of Deltona won first place with “American Bald Eagle,” pictured below. Norris’ winning artwork was created using colored pencils and markers. It will be displayed in the Cannon Tunnel to the U.S. Capitol, a corridor seen by thousands of visitors each year. “Cole’s beautiful artwork of a bald eagle is a phenomenal testament to his artistic talent,” Waltz said. “I know the visitors to our Capitol will appreciate his artwork and we are incredibly proud of him in the Sixth District. Cole certainly has a bright future ahead as an artist.” Norris’ first-place win also includes travel to Washington, D.C. with a guest for a reception and award presentation, courtesy of Southwest Airlines. Each spring, the Congressional Institute sponsors An Artistic Discovery, a nationwide competition for high school students interested in art who are looking to showcase their creativity. The contest recognizes and encourages artistic talents of young constituents across the nation. Over 100 high school students from 13 high schools in FL-6 competed in this year’s Congressional Art Competition. Sea Breeze High School junior Hannah Rice of Ormond Beach won second place with her drawing “Josh,” which will be displayed in Waltz’s district office. Waltz held a ceremony for the contest’s participants on Sunday at the Gateway Center for the Arts in Debary. “Florida’s Sixth District is lucky to have so many passionate and creative artists,” Waltz said. “It’s an honor to represent them in Congress and recognize their talents this year.” |
