ICYMI: Rep. Waltz: If Doctors, Grocery Store Employees Still Work, Congress Should Too

WASHINGTON, D.C. – On Wednesday, U.S. Rep. Michael Waltz (R-Fla.) spoke with Fox and Friends to push Congress to pass legislation providing additional funding for small businesses and hospitals – and also emphasized that Congress should continue working on solutions for economic recovery instead of taking another month-long recess. “In the military, as a Green Beret and even in a business, you lead from the front,” Waltz said. “I don’t understand why Speaker Pelosi has had [the House] out of session for almost a month – I guess she’s very comfortable in her kitchen in California – but the nearly one million Floridians that I’m representing expect us to get to work. I’m ready to get to work.” Waltz emphasized how despite the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, essential workers continue to work and provide services to the American people, just as the American people expect Congress to work for them. “If we can have people [driving] our ambulances, our healthcare workers and folks in grocery stores and all of those brave Americans out there taking those risks, I’m ready to take those risks, too,” Waltz said. “I can’t overstate how desperate things are becoming. We have to get to work. We have to help [Americans.]” Looking forward, Waltz said he would like to see future coronavirus recovery legislation focus on a payroll tax holiday supported by President Trump and liability protections for employers to avoid lawsuits post-pandemic. Waltz does not believe Congress should take another recess after passing the next phase of the economic recovery plan. On Tuesday, the Senate passed “Phase 3.5” of the coronavirus economic stimulus package. The House will take up on the measure Thursday and Waltz will be present in Washington to cast his vote on the bill. Watch the interview here. |
