Rep. Waltz Statement on Establishment of U.S. Space Command

U.S. Rep. Michael Waltz (R-Fla.) issued the following statement on the re-establishment of the U.S. Space Command on Thursday:

“Space is the new warfighting domain and we are under constant threat from hostile foreign actors like China and Russia, who are currently gearing up to take on the United States in space. It’s abundantly clear we must take these threats seriously,” Waltz said.

Space Command is a division within the Department of Defense intended to unify and direct national security operations in space.

Waltz, a member of both the Science, Space and Technology Committee as well as the House Armed Services Committee, has been a strong supporter of the U.S. Space Command and has made the push for Florida’s role in the 21st-century space race since coming to Congress this year.

Waltz has also voiced his support for the formation of a sixth branch of the military dedicated to protecting space and satellite infrastructure in the 2020 National Defense Authorization Act.

“Florida’s space talent, research institutions, launch capabilities and infrastructure will undoubtedly play a critical role in the Command’s operations,” Waltz said. “I’m grateful to President Trump and his Administration for making a unified, combatant Space Command a reality and I’m also looking forward to the authorization of a new military branch to protect American assets in space.”
