Rep. Waltz: Democrats’ Political Posturing Delays Defense Legislation and Hurts Our Military

WASHINGTON, D.C. — On Friday, U.S. Rep. Michael Waltz (R-Fla.) issued the following statement on Democrats’ failure to prioritize the passage of the National Defense Authorization Act and the likelihood of a Continuing Resolution to fund the Department of Defense:

“Congress has a duty to provide resources for our warfighters. Unfortunately, Democrats have failed to prioritize our troops in favor of political posturing, delaying the passage of the national defense authorization and causing another Continuing Resolution for our Department of Defense. This means no new authorities, no new funding, no pay raise for our troops and no long-term planning for our military."

Without passing National Defense Authorization Act, several new programs would be delayed, including:

  • Indo-Pacific Reassurance Initiative, which enhances American responsiveness and security capabilities in the region
  • Assistance to Afghanistan Security Forces, which continue to attempt to stabilize Afghanistan
  • Housing reforms for military families
  • Three percent troop pay raise

“On the 19th anniversary of the September 11 terrorist attacks on our homeland and at a time when we still face numerous threats nationwide, we should be prioritizing long-term resources for our military,” Waltz said. “Unfortunately, it seems Democrats are complacent about delaying negotiations on these bills – and are perfectly content to kick the can down the road once again, stifling our troops and hurting their long-range missions.

“Democrats’ behavior dishonors the Green Berets I lost in battle and the brave men and women like them who have died defending our country, as well as millions of other military men and women who selflessly answer the call to serve and depend on Congress to go to Washington, D.C. and get things done.”
