WASHINGTON, D.C. – On Thursday, U.S. Rep. Michael Waltz (R-Fla.) requested an update to an antiquated federal fund for water quality projects at the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee’s hearing on the Water Resources Development Act. Waltz discussed his proposal to update the Clean Water State Revolving Fund (CWSRF), which distributes funding to states for water quality projects. The CWSRF has not been updated since 1987. Since that time, Florida’s population has nearly doubled and its needs have grown. “For the same reasons that it is good government to reauthorize programs that have not been authorized in three decades, it is good policy for Congress to review and modernize how those additional resources are disbursed to states. It would be misguided policy to double the authorization level for a program without considering how and where those resources are disbursed. It’s time to update this formula.” An update to the formula would result in a 300 percent increase in funding for states like Florida. The additional funding would come at a critical time for the Sunshine State, which is susceptible to water quality issues. Last year, Waltz led a Florida delegation letter to the committee requesting an update to the formula. “Now is the time to address the glaring discrepancy of a more than 30 year old formula,” Waltz said.
